Cigar filler tobacco in North Bengal is harvested by priming 4-5 mature leaves at a time. The sun-cured leaves are strung on jute strings and spread on bamboo sticks, which are then placed on multi-tier bamboo structures in open spaces for 7-10 days of drying. After initial drying, the leaves are transferred to a katcha curing barn for 15-20 days until fully dried, including the midrib. Once cured, the leaves are conditioned, tied into hands, and bulked on raised platforms. The bulks are frequently broken and rebuilt over 6-8 weeks, making the tobacco ready for marketing.

Grading of Cigar Filler Tobacco

Cigar filler tobacco is graded based on leaf size, color, texture, strength, burn, and flavor. It is classified into two grades:
Raasi Grade: Uniform brown leaves, thin to medium texture, good size, mild strength, good burning with white ash, and agreeable flavor.
Cruz Grade: Smaller leaves, brown to dark brown color, medium texture, medium strength, burning with whitish-grey ash, and medium flavor.

Harvesting and curing

Our tobacco is harvested at full maturity using the stack-cut method. After harvesting, the crop is sun-dried in the field for 4-6 days, with plants turned upside down midway for even drying. Once dried, the crop is brought to the curing yard for further drying and curing over one and a half months. This involves a meticulous process of heaping, spreading, and turning to ensure the leaves achieve a rich, dark brown color. Leaves are then separated from the stalks and bundled using banana fiber. These bundles undergo additional sun drying if needed, followed by a series of bulking and re-bulking to maintain optimal moisture and quality.

Packing

Bales (packing) of 1.5 to 2.0 quintals are made with the help of thatch grass gunny bags or hessian cloth and jute rope. Before packing some water is sprinkled on the leaf bundles to maintain Lustre and aroma and to protect the leaves against storage beetle. Bale packings are opened after 10-20 days and repacked. This packing may be opened again after 1 or 2 months according to the condition of the leaves and repacked. This process is continued till the disposal of the leaf.
